In MemoriamProf. M.C. Sharma. July 4, 2005 Shot Peening Community Loses an Important Contributor Bhopal, India. The shot peening academic community was deeply saddened to learn of Prof. M.C. Sharma‚s passing on July 4, 2005. Prof. Sharma was an emeritus professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at MANIT Bhopal. He was a member of British Impact Treatment Association, a Fellow of Institution of Engineers in India and a member of the International Scientific Committee on Shot Peening. Prof. Sharma was also a tireless researcher and published many papers on his studies. He was currently the principal investigator for a Research and Development project for laser peening technology that was sponsored by BRNS Mumbai in India. Prof. Sharma worked on the very first International Conference on Shot Peening in Paris in 1981 and was an active participant in every conference thereafter. He was awarded the 1996 Shot Peener of the Year award for his dedication to engineering and shot peening. Prof. Sharma organized the first National Seminar and Workshop on „Shot Peening - Its Industrial Applications‰ in Bhopal, India in 1996. Each of his subsequent conferences grew in size and importance. „He worked diligently for many years, often with little or no support from outside, to improve the shot peening technology in India,‰ said Jack Champaigne of Electronics Inc. Prof. Sharma was scheduled to be an instructor at the upcoming Shot Peening and Blast Cleaning Workshop in Dallas, Texas and a speaker at ICSP-9 ˜ he will be greatly missed. On behalf of the Shot Peening community, Dr. Volker Schulze, Chairman of ISCSP and Dr. Abbas Niku-Lari, Chairman of the organizing committee, have dedicated the ICSP-9 proceedings to Prof. M.C. Sharma.
