Purdue University Shot Peening Center Update -- 10/01 Professor Christine L. Corum, Mechanical Engineering Technology - Purdue University, reports the following activities in the Surface Enhancement Center: A number of cast steel and cut wire shot samples are being analyzed for size and shape using both computer image analysis and traditional screen sieve analysis in a project titled "Image Analysis Validation of Shot Peening Media" funded through a Purdue Research Foundation grant. Professor Corum and an undergraduate student are working jointly on this project. Analysis tools were donated by W. S. Tyler (T. Reckart) and shot samples have so far been donated by Ervin Industries (D. Scharer) and Premier Shot Company (R. Gillespie). This fall, the center will be used for shot peening fatigue testing specimens currently used in one of our MET undergraduate courses - Applied Strength of Materials. This is a required course for our students and is taught every semester. MET students will begin to be introduced to shot peening through our curriculum no later than Spring 2002 and perhaps as early as this Fall. There is a need at this time for an air drier to be used with our compressed air source. Cost is estimated in the $4,000-$5,000 range.
