Abstract:
It is now a well known fact that controlled shot peening (CSP) is an effective means to retard or prevent stress corrosion cracking (SCC). In order for SCC to occur, static tensile stress must be present at the surface fo the susceptible material. SCC cannot occur in an area of compressive stress. The compressive stresses induced by shot peening have proven to be successful in the retardation and prevention of stress corrosion cracking.
