Title: Techniques Of Surface Stressing To Avoid Fatigue
Author: Fuchs, Henry O.
Source: Metal Fatigue, McGraw-Hill '59, p. 197
Publication year 1959

Number of pages: 35
Abstract:
The power of surface stressing to save or destroy fatigue life is explained by two facts: fatigue is a surface effect and fatigue is a tension effect. Like all broad
statements, these two are subject to some minor qualifications which will be discussed later. The reader is cautioned not to let the qualifications overshadow these two
basic facts which explain more than 99 per cent of all fatigue failures and their prevention by compressive stresses in critical surfaces.
