Abstract:
Future airframe designs may incorporate the lightweight lithium-containing aluminuim alloys and silicom carbide reinforced aluminium alloys which offer enhanced specific stiffness and strength. The present research set out to investigate the influence of shot peening on the fatigue performance of the monolithic and composite materials under rotating bend loading conditions with a stress ratio R=-1. The metal matrix composites are shown to respond favourabley to shot peening for a given set of parameters, but severe peening may lead to excessive surface roughness.
