What is a coverage map and why is it important?

Coverage map is a technique to determine how much coverage each area of a (complex) part receives. A simple part, for example a flat piece, would be easy to demonstrate that the coverage is uniform and equal across the entire area. Complex shape parts may not receive the same impact treatment in all areas. Some areas can become completely covered very quickly while others require additional exposure time. A coverage map will identify areas of concern and indicate how much time is needed to cover that area.

This is important because some automatic machines will continue to cover the areas already receiving complete coverage and thus over-peening may be of concern. It is also important because it can demonstrate that at least all of the component was covered. Robotic systems can give 100% to each area. Automatic systems may give much more than 100% to some of the areas.
