Abstract:
Shot peening is widely used in the aricraft industry for fatigue life enhancement derived from compressive residual stresses. Traditionally, almen strips are used to measure the shot peening intensity, which is directly related to the resulting residual stress profile induced. These profiles do not appear to be sensitive to shot size or velocity. However, peening also induces plastic strains which are potentially detrimental. This effect appears to be very sensityve to shot size and velocity, and not dependent on intensity.
