Abstract:
Results on the relation between decarburization and the effect of shot peening are presented. An appropriate shot-peening condition for decarburized SUP6 (Si--Mn steel) spring steel plate is proposed. The fatigue life can be increased by applying shot peening twice under the following conditions: 0.7 mm steel-shot -> 0.4 mm cut-wire and 0.7 mm steel-shot -> glass-beads (wet honing). Even under these shot-peening conditions, it was noted that there was no difference in the fatigue life under the conventional shot-peening conditions when the decarburized layer was > 0.l5 mm.
