Abstract:
Developed in the late twenties, shot peening was discovered by accident. a small batch of automobile valve springs behaved much better than expected under test. Investigation revealed that thet had been shot blasted to improve the surface. this discovery led to commercial development of the process, although up to the start of the second world war the process was confined almost exclusively to automotive parts such as springs, gears and axles. During the war, pressing need for higher performance without increased weight caused rapid development of the shot peening process.
