I have a question for you concerning media analysis of SCCW shots.

In AMS-S-13165 the information is given on this point (media size / shape analysis) is applicable only for cut wire shots and not SCCW shots (table 1) . Am I right on that?

If I refer to AMS2431/8, I see that size requirements shall be inspected by weighting 50 pieces of shots and measuring their diameter. However I know that there are some ways to perform sieve analysis of SCCW simply by narrowing the range of acceptable dimension (using 4 sieves instead of 5). Are you aware of such methods? I asked SCCW manufacturers about that and they all told me to use the same sieving procedure as I use for CS shots of similar dimensions (ie CS230 for SCCW28). however this doesn't apply very well because the size range of SCCW is narrower than CS, so the screening tolerances doesn't quite fit.

Also in AMS-2431/8, table 2 is quite difficult to understand. What's the concept of "fields" ? Marginal particles "all fields" number of fields viewed?

Pleae let me know if you have any experience with this.

Table 2 of AMS-2431/8 seems clear to me - although there is an error in footnote (2)! A "field" is simply the contained region that the sample is poured into. For example AWCH62 can be poured into a 1" x 1" container giving a 1 square inch "field". If the shot was a uniform 0.0625" (1/16 inch) then there would be 16 x 16 particles IF they arranged themselves in a perfect square-packing manner. That gives 256 particles. This "field of 256" particles is then inspected microscopically. The process is to be repeated 9 times so that about 2300 particles are inspected (9 x 256 = 2304). The allowed 63 marginal particle maximum is about 3% of that number. The allowed 2 unacceptable particle maximum is about 0.1% of 2300 - not 1%.

Thanks for the answer. does the table 2 of AMS 2431/8 applies to new media (supplier spec) or in use media?
