Abstract:
The investigations described show that information on the magnitude and depth of the induced residual stresses can be obtained by shot-peening plates of different thickness. The simple procedure adopted offers a better description of the shot-peening process than the usual Almen-intensity measurement. The two parameters used, the effective depth and the average magnitude of the source stress, define the residual stress distribution induced by the shot-peening process. The method can also be used to obtain a rough estimate of the optimum shot-peening parameters in respect of residual stress distribution.
