Abstract:
This specification covers nonmetallic abrasive materials used in the blast cleaning of metal surfaces and glass reinforced plastic surfaces, such as ships' hulls and tanks for removing rust, scale, old paint and marine growth and to provide surfaces that are clean and suitable for painting. Abrasive inorganic materials are, for example, minerals and slags. Inorganic abrasives are used to remove coatings to bare metal. Inorganic abrasives have set limits for toxic metal content and radioactivity and meet Enviromental Protection Agency hazardous waste requirements. In addition, Navy worker health and safety requirements and Navy corrosion control requirements have also been addressed.
