INTRODUCTION Shot peening coverage of components is, of course, very important. The importance of coverage optimization is emphasized in SAE J2277 with its: “Effectiveness of shot peening is directly dependent on coverage. Inadequate or excessive coverage may be detrimental to fatigue.” Unfortunately, many users still believe that “More is Better” and require huge amounts of coverage, e.g., “300%”. This approach ignores the importance of the other factors that govern optimum coverage.
