Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: Every shot peener distorts components—if only in the form of Almen strips. They would be useless if they didn’t distort! Distortion is caused by a combination of plastic deformation and induced residual stresses. Force, rigidity and bending moment determine the amount of distortion. This article aims to explain, for non-experts, how distortion in a shot peened component develops.
